Extend the Battery Life of Rechargeable Laptop Batteries
A lithium battery is used in laptops to power the laptop when it's not plugged into an electric outlet. The typical laptop battery, used under normal circumstances, will last anywhere from 12 to 24 months. After that, the amount of time the laptop can run on battery power will begin decreasing, indicating it's time to replace the battery. There are things you can to do extend the life of your laptop battery.
Prevent the laptop from overheating. Overheating is one of the most common causes of laptop battery damage. Prevent damage by using a cooling pad while the laptop is on your lap. Place the cooling pad under your laptop and plug into the USB port on your computer. Never use a pillow or blanket as that can block cooling fans on the bottom of a laptop.
Use an AC adapter with the correct voltage. Plugging an AC adapter with the wrong voltage into your laptop can damage the laptop and the battery.
Clean the battery regularly. Remove the battery from the bottom of the laptop by pushing the tabs holding the battery in place to the side. The battery will either slide or pop out. Dip a cotton swab in rubbing alcohol and clean the battery contacts. Use an alcohol wipe, or a cloth dampened in rubbing alcohol, to wipe down the rest of the battery.
Discharge, or use, the full life of the battery. Completely recharge the battery. PC Mag recommends doing this once for every 30 times you charge or partially charge the battery.
