According to a site called Crazy About Cupcakes: "Store your cupcakes in a plastic airtight container in the refrigerator. They will stay fresh for several days. The only cupcakes that you will need to eat within a day of preparing are ones that use uncooked eggs in the frosting. Cupcakes keep well in the freezer. When you have some free time bake a batch of cupcakes and whip up some frosting. Do not frost the cupcakes. Divide the cupcakes and frosting into separate airtight containers. When you want a treat defrost the cupcakes and frosting, ice and decorate, and serve."
According to a site called Still Tasty: "Unfrosted cupcakes that do not contain filling made with dairy products or eggs (such as buttercream, whipped cream or custard fillings) may be kept at room temperature for two days; place in a covered airtight container. Cupcakes will keep for an additional week in the refrigerator; cover with foil or plastic wrap to prevent cupcakes from drying out. To freeze, wrap cupcakes tightly with aluminum foil or plastic freezer wrap, or place in heavy-duty freezer bag. ... Foods kept constantly frozen at 0° F will keep safe indefinitely."
Personally, I've kept old birthday cakes (with icing) wrapped in tinfoil in the pantry and still found it pretty moist and tasty a week (or two or three) later. No "side effects" (upset stomach, trips to the bathroom), or anything.
