The most important part of getting rid of poison ivy forever is to thoroughly eradicate the root system of the plant. You can use numerous methods to kill the plant and remove the stems and leaves of the poison ivy plant, but you still need to pull out all of the roots to stop the plant from growing back and spreading elsewhere. Dig up the ground surrounding the plant and follow the root system to its end. Take a shovel, and dig around it, as to ensure you get the roots as well to make sure that it will not grow back.
If getting it out means taking other plants with it, that's a better option than just leaving it there to infect everything.

One thing you could try before you go that route, is giving the roots several good drinks of undiluted white vinegar. It makes for great weed control, and is not full of pesticides, herbicides, etc.
