How to develop communication skill for a person who is shy in nature?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I was an extremely shy young person myself, until I took a job in a grocery store where I HAD to talk to people. It wasn't usually any more than telling them the amount of their groceries and a polite thank you, but I gradually became more comfortable with strangers. I'm still a bit on the shy side, but nothing like I used to be! So I guess it was a kind of an aversion therapy, confronting my fears about speaking to people.

I've also learned easy ways to start conversations without having to say much myself--everybody likes to talk about themselves so ask people questions about themselves, nothing too personal, just things like what they do for a living, how they got into that line, do they have children (people LOVE to talk about their children), what interests do they have, simple questions like that.

I'd also suggest the shy person join some sort of organized group who share his/her interests, because then you automatically have something to talk about. The more you make the effort to talk to people, the easier it becomes over time. It won't happen overnight.

And there's really nothing wrong with being shy; we're all wired differently. I'd rather hang out with someone who talked very little as opposed to someone who never lets you get a word in edgewise.

You could start by putting yourself in situations where you have to communicate. Take a job as a waitress for example..You will continually build upon your strength of communicating thus conquering your fear. A great book on that is Feel The Fear and Do It Anyways by Susan Jeffreys.
