How to cut down on smelly dog farts. I am not kidding! I love my big dog to pieces but boy, can he stink up a room! Any ideas?

He gets good quality kibble and dosn't get a lot of treats ofr scraps other than when training. This is not a new thing. He has always been a stinker.

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I'm curious about his age. Is he getting to be about a middle-aged dog? 5... 6 years old?
(4 if he's a Great Dane?)

If that's the case, it could just be him entering mid-life and getting more gassy. My little Chihuahua Lola has not only reached middle age... she's now in her geriatric twilight years and they've gone from often and stinky to often and audible. It's hilarious. She's tiny, but will make these high pitched squeaky farts as she's getting up or jumping up into a chair. She never even made actual farting sound when she was younger.

I found this forum, and the person at the top sounds exactly like you. No change in food, etc.

In this forum, they talk about adding a little rice and maybe a little yogurt to the diet.

If you think there might be something more to his farts... you might want to bring it up with your Vet the next time you schedule an appointment. If you know your vet's office, maybe you could call and talk to the front office and see if they have any short term solutions or tricks for you to try.

You should also count your blessings and be glad you don't have a bunny like Sadie! ;)

Oh my!!! My dog is that way too-----sometimes you walk in the house from outside and the whole house smells like a dog fart! And he's only a little over a year old! And like you said---they're loud! I've never had a dog who had loud farts before, usually they're the silent but deadly type..........

There is an overview at dogflatulence.com and a veterinary perspective at the vetbase site. Simply mild flatulence can be treated with better dietary control while a more serious problem may require a consultation with the vet as there may be a digestive illness.

Most people "think" their dog is on good quality kibble but in fact if you check ingredients - this is not always the case. Foods such as Hills Science Diet, Iams, Purina, all market themselves as good food but are NOT!

some of the biggest problem causers are pork, beef, soy, wheat, and corn - although not in that order.

also be aware of "meat meal" which can be any dead animal - thus could be crap ingredients.

Since this has been an on going problem its probably not another health concern - most likely food related... as such switch to a more bland diet and see what happens

also YUCCA (an ingredient in some foods - is good for controlling odors.
