How to best treat high cholesterol?

Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The best treatment for high cholesterol will depend on who you talk to. I know many doctors prescribe cholesterol-lowering drugs called statins to help and they do that. Drugs in this category include Lipitor and Zocor. However, I have also read and heard a lot about those same statin drugs being dangerous and causing side effects, especially if taken long term. Probably the best way to treat high cholesterol is through eating right and exercising. I went on a vegan diet and cut my total cholesterol by 40 points which is all I needed to get it where it is supposed to be. A vegan diet cuts out all meat, eggs and dairy products. All three of those products have super high cholesterol levels in them. Just one egg has 75% of the daily recommended amount of cholesterol. I know that this diet is rather hard for most people but you can cut down on these ingredients. Eating leaner cuts of meat will help. Try soy milk or yogurt instead of that from cows. Exercising is also a great way to help lower cholesterol. Depending on where you read anywhere from 20 to 30 minutes of brisk walking most days will help to lower your cholesterol. Eating right and exercising will not only help your cholesterol levels, it will have feeling great all over.
