How to become an NFL player?
My nephew at a young age of 13 is showing great interest in football. He is a big fan of the New England Patriots and never fail to watch their games. He has collection of football cards, T-shirts and other items related to them. Maybe this is just a passing interest but I just want to know what are some steps in becoming an NFL player? This information might help him someday. Thanks!

Hard work, harder work and then even harder work. There is a lot of natural talent also involved in becoming a National Football League player. A young athlete will need to work on different parts of his game, depending on the position he plays. Below is a list to think about. Note that not all listed elements apply to every position, although if the athlete possesses them it certainly is a plus. Working on each of these elements to improve current abilities is a must.
Breakaway speed - the ability to not be caught from behind
Burst - the ability to accelerate quickly to get through a hole or off the line of scrimmage
Power - the ability to physically move your opponent or to break a tackle
Quickness - the ability to start and stop or change direction quickly
Strength - being able to control your opponent physically
Footwork - being able to run crossovers and maintain balance
Learning ability - remember there are many plays in a pro playbook that must be learned
Leadership qualities - being able to elevate the play of those around you
Size - the bigger the better as long as combined with the other elements
Pro teams also are interested in the psychological make-up of it's players. Can they control their emotions? Can they perform under pressure or will they break? Can they be part of a team or are they more interested in individual statistics.
Remember that each of these elements that go to make up a player are needed to different degrees depending on the position played.
Hiring coaches or personal trainers is of course a huge advantage to a young player, but the player must be committed, so be careful. The support of family and friends plays a huge part in their developments as well. Be careful though since there are always drawback as in the case of the very talented ex quarterback; Todd Marinovich.
He was a highly touted athlete, trained by professionals since he was a youth; a starter in college and first round draft choice in the pros, and a perfect example of what may happen to an athlete if pushed too hard.
