The instrument can be quite beautiful when played correctly. Sometimes trombonists can get a bad rap for being "too loud" or "edgy." That's definitely it's role in bands and sometimes orchestras. I would suggest looking into trombone quartets and quintets. There's no sound like the sound of a trombone chamber group. Pure, dark and riveting, it always touches me. Also, some good solo musicians to listen to are Christian Lindberg, Alain Trudel, and Joseph Alessi. I think if you listen to some of their recordings, you'll get the idea :). Abby Conant is my favorite soloist and I always modeled my sound after hers, plus she plays a lot of organ and trombone music. This instrumental combination is one of the bests, the sounds of the organ and the trombone meld so nicely, giving kind of a regal feel, depending on what genre of music it is. Definitely take some time to look into both trombone soloists as well as orchestral trombone excerpts, especially some of the Brahms chorals. There's a lot to appreciate!
