The casing on the macbooks are pretty tough I have dropped my several times and it has not had one problem. If you do drop your macbook do a full inspection, make sure non of the keys came loose that there is not a huge dent where the internal components could be exposed.
Plastic casing are tougher than the aluminum. But if you have happen to crack the case they can be fixed and its relatively inexpensive. I highly recommend that you take it to an authorized reseller to have it repaired or to the Apple store. If you take it to the Apple store you will get a warranty for all parts and labor, little more expensive but you will have a piece of mind that it was repaired correctly.
Not sure if mac will keep offering them both in aluminum and plastic only they know.
