How should I react to a friend's father's death?

This friend is someone who we have known for years, and we've met and socialized with his dad on dozens of different occasions over the years. He was a great guy. We found out the dad past away two weeks ago, and when I expressed regret that no one told us (so we could go to the funeral), the friend said he just didn't feel like calling to tell anyone. So how should we respond? Should we send flowers? A card? Or should we let it go, seeing as a quietness is what the friend wanted to begin with?

I think you should let your friend know your there for them as it sounds like they are taking it hard and internalizing it. If they are Catholic send a mass card. Who would you send flowers to if the funeral is over? You can also send a sympathy card but if you were close enough to have been with him dozens of times don't send an off the rack $2 special. As when your friends gets over their grieving they will think back to thank you. Let your friend come around on their own but don't let them go away. If you don't hear from them give them a call to go do something without mentuioning their Dad. Let them grieve in their own way.
