I consider NDM-1 superbug to be a very serious. This is a case of an enzyme produced by certain types of bacteria that make them resistant to antibiotics. The scary part is that the gene for producing this enzyme can be easily transferred from one bacteria type to the other, and this can result to the production of bacteria that cannot be destroyed by any kind of drug. This could cause a serious medical chaos, if something is not done to curb the spread now.

Two harmless bacteria (Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumonia) that are usually found in the gut of humans, have been linked to the NDM-1 superbug. Some of the Symptoms of the NDM-1 superbug includes dizziness, Severe stomach cramps, Diarrhea, fever, Nausea and vomiting.

In my opinion, dealing with NDM-1 is actually very serious. After all, your body simply won't have the help of antibiotics while fighting off bacteria. Like many other bugs, I imagine that children and the elderly are also most at risk for serious complications from NDM-1.

That said, I'm still confident that your chances of getting it are very low. Outbreaks have been pretty well contained in my opinion, at least thus far. If you haven't been in contact with someone known to have NDM-1 or taken a recent trip to a foreign country for a medical procedure, you'll probably be just fine.

NDM-1 or New Delhi metallo-beta -lactamose is a bacteria that attaches itself onto another serious disease like Kebsiella pneumonia and E. coli. Once this will happen, the condition becomes very drug resistant even to carbapenems that are used as a last resort treatment.

For the symptoms:
The symptoms will be that of E. coli and pneumonia which will be resistant to treatment.
These are usually diarrheathat is mild to severe in nature, water and bloody stool with pain and cramping in the abdomen area, nausea and vomiting and urinary tract infection or UTI.

Klebsiella pneumonia symptoms:
* high fever up to 103 degrees Fahrenheit or greater
* fever with dizziness and chills
* cough with sputum from lungs and blood
* severe nasal congestion and symptoms of wheezing

Risk factors for this superbug includes:
-having been hospitalized in India, Pakistan or Bangladesh
- those who have undergone plastic surgery procedure in India and Pakistan

Treatment:
There is a great deal of investment in researching to find new antibiotics but experts admitted that most of the drugs currently out in the market is useless for treating NDM-1 positive patients.
The reason behind this is that the bacteria that carry NDM-1 are Gram-negative and most of the work is being carried out for Gram-positive bugs like MRSA.
The Health Protection Agency encourage the pharmaceutical industry to continue to work in developing new treatment options because mulit-resistant Gram negative bacteria is a danger to the health of the public.

From what I have read, it looks like this could become very serious.

The National Health Service is on red alert to detect the NDM-1 superbug that is resistant to the most powerful antibiotics and there is concern that a new gene that allows any bacteria to become a superbug could become widespread in NHS hospitals. NDM-1 is named after New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamose because that was the first place the bacteria was identified. So far it has infected 50 of those from Great Britain, many of them had surgery in India or Pakistan.

Director of antibiotic resistance monitoring at the Health Protection Agency., Dr David Livermore, said resistance to the carbapenems, is found throughout India. The carbapenems are usually the last of the antibiotics used that are resistant to other drugs.

It's a scary situation that is going to continue to be monitored and researched to see what can be done to prevent and kill off this bacteria.
