Hi!
San Diego is not located directly against the San Andreas fault-line which runs through California. While this does not mean that San Diego is earthquake free, it is less likely to experience The Big One than other major California cities.
Like all California cities, modern San Diego architecture is built to withstand earthquakes. It has comparatively few skyscrapers and those buildings are designed with vibration-control in additton to other earthquake engineering. This allows buildings to sway in an earthquake rather than shattering.
Single family homes in San Diego are generally built using wood and stucco rather than brick which is a safety precaution. Additionally most homes in Southern California do not have basements because the ground does not freeze and this also helps to reduce the risk of earthquake damage.
