As for profitability, Mahalo has had 21 million dollars in funding so it is not yet profitable I believe. With 40 employees the costs are high, but revenue comes in in different ways:
Ads: Mahalo takes a bit over half the money made with ads, half goes to the user who created the page (but it is in mahalo dollars, so in reality if a guy gets 1 mahalo dollar from managing a page, he gets 75 cents).
People buying mahalo dollars for tips: This is not a major source of revenue, Mahalo seems to be betting on the long run with all the ads.
