I haven't spent any extended period in Mexicali. The people there are better off than many other border towns. Many of the Mexicali residents actually work in the United States. Because you are allowed to cross the border and stay within 15 miles without a passport, even if you work for $8/hour, you can have a middle class life on the Mexico side once you convert your salary to pesos. Their biggest problem that I noticed was a lack of water. Everything is dry, no green grass in the parks and hot as hell!
