How plausible is the gray goo scenario?
So, I was looking around the internet, and stumbled upon this thing called the gray goo scenario or something. Basically it said that in the future science could create nanobots capable of easily outcompeting anything nature ever designed. And then, since they could replicate like crazy, and kill everything and anything, they could easily swallow up the whole world, leaving behind a gray goo, hence the name. Now, that was a really bad explanation, but how likely is something like that to happen?

I suspect that the goo would probably come in various colors depending on the materials dissolved and the scales involved. If the gaps between individual nano-machines were on the order of light it would probably be quite colorful. I would also imagine that nano-machine's self-assembled from organics would be clear or black (not grey) because carbon would be the dominant element in them.
