According to the official Bobby Orr Website, Bobby retired in October of 1978 at the relatively tender young age of 30. Surgery on a knee problem had left him with limited mobility and he felt he was hurting his team. Having started his NHL career at age 18, he was able to log 12 years on the ice in a spectacular career.
