How old should your kids be before it's okay to swear in front of them?

If you swear in your day to day life, you'll most likely have to introduce your kids to it at some point. Waiting until they're adults seems a little unrealistic, so what's the magic number?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I'm not sure there is a magic number. I have swore in front of my kids and I'm also sure that they hear swear words that are worse than those I use in other places like school, online and on the television. The most important thing is to teach them that these words are not polite to use in a normal day to day conversation. Let them know that when they grow up they can choose to swear or not but to always be respectful in front of others and curb the urge to swear. I am 37 years old and I still don't swear in front of my mother. Whether you swear or not it is more important to show people around you some respect by not swearing.

When they move out of the house they can swear in front of me. What they do with their friends that I don't hear is their business. And this has always been the house rule. And yes I've cursed in front of them since they were young.

I swear a lot because my family swears a lot. However, I wish to stop this family tradition. I can't live without swear words myself, but I think people can live without swear words. I know that swearing is like taboo in some cultures. In this cultures, it is possible to meet people who never swear. I would like my kids to be like such people. I think swearing is only a necessity when you grow up with it. I try to discipline myself now. Swearing is a waste of energy. The energy can be used for more productive endeavors.
