The town charter of Louisville, KY was signed by then Virginia Governor, Thomas Jefferson on May 1, 1780 and became incorporated in 1828. The founder of the city, George Rogers Clark, named the city after France's King Louis XVI. (The only French king ever to be put to death by the population, by the way.)

The Louisville area had been home to native Indians prior to the settlers arrival, and artifacts dating back to 1000 B.C.have been found. Its convenient location along the Ohio River, its rich soil, and excellent hunting and fishing grounds made that area a prime location for the Chickasaw Indians who belonged to the group Native Indians known as the Moundbuilders. Preserved mounds can be found at Kentucky's Wickliffe Mounds, near Paducah.

Over the years, Louisville has continued to grow along with the country, providing us with a look at ancient America, the early American settler's lives, and the Civil War. During the Civil War, Louisville was the largest slave trading city in the country, but was also a stop for the Underground Railroad, through which a number of slaves escaped into the freedom of Indiana. Louisville elite demonstrated their bonds to English aristocracy with the inaugural of the Kentucky Derby, but also introduced the true American drink, the "Mint Julep" made with the best Kentucky bourbon. Besides the Derby, sport enthusiasts also thank Louisville for the production of the Great American Pastime bat, the Louisville Slugger. Louisville's many contributions to the state and to the country provide a complete link to life in America.
