Hi The_Valley,

Boston is 381 years old. Puritan colonists founded it on September 17, 1630. They were the Puritans of the Massachusetts Bay Colony not the Pilgrims. The Pilgrims earlier had founded founded Plymouth Colony. Plymouth colony is now Bristol County, Plymouth County, and Barnstable County, Massachusetts. These two groups were not similar at all.
Massachusetts' largest city and capital is Boston. It is also considered to be one of the oldest cities in the United States. Boston has both a tremendous economic and cultural impact on the entire New England region. It is also the largest city in New England and because of all of this, Boston is considered to be the unofficial "Capital of New England." In 2009, Boston had an estimated population of 645,169. This made it the twentieth largest city in the country and it is also, the tenth-largest metropolitan area in the country.

Boston was the first major city in the United States. William Blackstone, an English immigrant came to Boston in 1629 and a year later John Winthrop and the Puritan settlers arrived just north of Salem. Blackstone invited them to Shawmut and Winthrop renamed it Boston in 1630. He named it after his home town in Lincolnshire, England. Boston became the center for Puritan life over the next 200 years. It wasn't long before noted theologians and statesmen settled in the area. Harvard University was founded and Boston became known as the a main educational and intellectual center. The Boston area continued to grow during the 18th century are more settled came and formed towns outside of city of Boston. Other main cities began to emerge in the United States, but the first major city in the country was Boston.
