Cartoon’s history is as old as Pharaoh’s. It has appeared in various forms and shapes. It has molded its course from paper to magazine as strip comics and then to newspaper comics. Later it shifted to animated series. First full fledge acclaimed cartoons were made in the year 1928. Its name was steamboat wily and it was a Mickey Mouse cartoon. It was made under the banner of Walt Disney. It was a black and white cartoon as we all know at that time colored cinema was not introduced.

Initially cartoons were nothing more than a framed block with sound but as the time passed and films making advanced, new animation techniques were introduced. Because of this the cartoon industry advanced. Initially computers were not advanced and they merely existed. Cartoon industry evolved as the computer evolved to what it is today. From that time till to date Mickey Mouse has also emerged as one of the most highly watched cartoon and is still considered as one of the best of the earliest cartoons.

In 1906 Sheffield-born film producer J Stuart Blackton won the accolade of becoming the first animator with Humorous Phases of Funny Faces, a silent movie where where a dog jumps through a hoop, a scene which uses cutout animation made to look like chalk outlines.

The film moves at 20 frames per second.

It all seems a long way from Ice Age 3. While only shifting up to 24 frames a second, Ice Age: Dawn Of The Dinosaurs employed a bank of computers to manipulate the images.

In just over one hundred years, animation has literally evolved before our eyes from the advent of sound cartoons in 1928, through feature length movies like Snow White to the digital age where Toy Story and The Incredibles entranced yet another generation of cinema-goers.

Twenty years after Blackton’s pioneering effort, the introduction of sound film quickly caught on with animators in the form of Walt Disney’s Steamboat Willie, the third theatrical appearance of Mickey Mouse.

Disney would go on to take advantage of the technology offered by Technicolour while rivals such as Max Fleischer fell by the wayside (his massively successful suggestive Betty Boop cartoons suffered under “Production Code” censorship).

In 1936 Disney raised the bar with the feature lengh Snow White, an enormous financial gamble (it took two years to make as opposed to WALL.E’s four) that paid off handsomely.

However, with Walt's concentration on longer films coupled with increasingly lame shorts, Warners stepped into the breach.

Hi Buckets! Cartoons in modern print media has dates of first being used as far back as 1843. This was when Punch magazine used cartoon to describe their drawings. The term cartoon has several meanings has a variety of different illustration and visual art forms. Cartoonists are the artists who create cartoons. The definition of a cartoon has evolved over time. Initially, it meant fine art like a tapestry or painting. The current meaning refers to both animated films and humorous illustrations. More recently, it has included animated digital media and electronic media with creative visual work. In print media, the word cartoon is referred to as more of on the humorous side that utilizes typeset captions. Sometimes it is also known as a comic strip and is related to fiction or nonfiction, as a humorous illustration.

Cartoons came about in the mid 1910's. At the time 24 pictures had to be drawn for a single second of film. The animated cel was produced in 1914 which enabled the animator to just draw portions of the image that moved, saving a lot of time. In 1928, Steamboat Willie was the first significant cartoon with synchronized sound. Flower and Trees was the first to use Technicolor three color process. During the 1930's, MGM, Paramount, Warners and Universal created their own cartoon departments. Most theatrical cartoons on television were drawn from the late 1930's through the 1950's. Some of the earliest and most popular cartoon characters were not made for television but for the theater, as back in those days there was also a cartoon before the main picture. Such characters include Bugs Bunny, Mickey Mouse, Daffy Duck and Popeye.
