How often should you change a mattress??

Are there any health concerns if you don't change it often enough??
Tip for best answer: M$3.15

There is no magical answer for how often you should buy a new matress, so COnsumerReports suggests that You Might Need a New Matress If...
- if you wake up tired and achy
- if you sleep better away from home
- if you matress looks saggy and lumpy

Apart from these telltale signs, it's generally agreed that you should replace your matress at least every 10 years, or more often (every 5-7 years) if you are over the age of 40 as your body can't tolerate as much punishment at that point.

A mattress can be changed every 4- 7 years depending on how it has been used and the type of mattress it is.
That is why it is advisable to buy a very good mattress from the start

Wow, in that case my set of mattresses is long overdue! I think I've had them for 10+ years now.
Not poky though..

So you're saying my 16 year old mattress with poky springs, dents, and squeaks isn't good anymore? ;)

The life expectancy of a good mattress is about 10-14 years according to http://blog.us-mattress.com/tag/life-expectancy, as well as many mattress manufacturers.

However, there are certain things you should do to ensure your mattress reaches that age in decent shape. If it's a single-sided mattress you should rotate it periodically, and if it's a double-sided one, you should flip it over and rotate it periodically. Aside from that you should keep it clean, dry, and stable. For more details see http://ezinearticles.com/?Extending-The-Life-Of-Your-Mattress&id=403961.

Some online sources claim to have data supporting the notion that mattresses older than 5 years provide poorer sleep than newer mattresses, however, these sources appear to have a vested interest in having mattresses replaced more often, leading one to question how independent their advice is.

my neighbor has a mattress of just 2 years and anytime she sleeps on it she wakes up with pain all over her body. she didnt know it was the mattress until her doctor told ner to sleep in the guest room for a change .she did and woke up better. she has a new one now orthopaedic though but better.
You can have a mattress of 20 years but have only slept on it for 2 years..... that bed is still 2 years old... :-)

There are certainly poorly designed and poorly made mattresses that will sag or become otherwise unusable after that short a time. However, I stated the 10-14 year life expectancy for a good mattress.

"It depends on you if you are no longer comfortable sleeping on it or the condition of the mattress is really bad you should change it. But normally it's between 5-7 years."
That seems to make the most sense, if it isn't broke don't fix it

according to a commercial for a local mattress store here, you should change your mattress at least every 8 years. A buildup of body fluids, dustmites, and dirt causes your mattress to double in weight. Gross, I know.

there is a chain of mattress stores in the Los Angeles area called sit n sleep and they mention this in their ads using humor, they will tell you "those other mattress stores don't give a sheet about you" or you are "up sheets creek without a paddle" http://www.sitnsleep.com/

it depends on the quality of mattress....for a grade quality you can use it for 10 years but for lower grade , its better if you change once in 6 years...

I know what they say about how often you should get a new mattress, but I have a 17 year old mattress that is in excellent condition, no sags or broken springs, and it's very comfortable. In fact, I bought a new one about 3 years ago, and ended up selling it to my ex because it was so hard, even though it had a pillow top.

So from what I'm seeing it says a mattress need be replaced every 7-10 years, however it depends on the height and weight of the sleeper(s), frame/support and even the climate to a certain extent. If it's becoming lumpy or saggy...change it...If you're suddenly having issues sleeping, flip the mattress, and if that doesn't work...guess what....look for a new one.
