How often should we water our tomato plants?

I think I might be killing our tomato plants. These are regular in-ground tomato plants with full sun. For the last month we've had temps well over 90 and for two weeks, the heat index has been in the 100s. I water 3x each week - is that too much? Our container tomato plants are doing great - but the others are looking pretty bad. The leaves are turning yellow and some are already brown. Am I drowning my plants or burning them up? Help!

They should be watered twice a day. Early in the morning as the sun is coming up and at night before it is going down. Drown them tomatoes are just about all water. The leaves should not have that dry feeling to them. The container plants are doing good because the containers hold the water. Don't forget to tie the plants up I like to run a string system across both ways over the plants and then tie the plants up to the strings. Some people use sticks or wire cones to keep the tomatoes off the ground. Water ground plants a good 15-20 minutes morning and night and do not water when the sun is up high. Water sitting on the tomato will burn it in the hot sun.

It sounds like you are not watering enough, with that kind of heat it would be hard to over water them. Your problem might be in the soil, if you have sub-par soil it wont hold moisture nearly as well. This is probably what is turning your leaves brown if I had to guess. Also, container plants shouldn't be watered as much as the in ground plants.

If you feel like your having trouble figuring out how much is *too* much or how little is *too* little, they make little glass orbs that can water plants for you. The glass works by holding water until the soil becomes dry and then dripping little bits at a time. They are designed for indoor or porch plants but they will work just the same in a garden. A common brand of these neat little trinkets would be Aqua Globes.
