How often should one clean a cats litter box?

I am slacking on my cats' litter box. My mom used to take care of it but now it's my job. I usually get it done about once a week, maybe a little less. I have two cats and they both use the box, although one goes outside sometimes (I have one indoor and one outdoor cat). How often should I actually clean the box? How often should I change the litter? My mom told my to empty the litter, clean the box and fill it with new stuff about every month, but that seems to long in my opinion! What is the recommended amount of time to go between cleanings? What about with multiple cats?

Your cat appreciates a clean box just as you appreciate having a clean toilet to use. They HATE stepping over or trying to get around old poop or other cat's leavings.

If you have one cat, clean the box every day. Kitty will be happy, and the smell will be kept at an absolute minimum. Even the "no smell" litters can be overwhelmed by poop and urine left in the box for a week at a time.

I use this rule of thumb: For every additional cat, clean the box that many more times a day. I have three, and morning, after lunch and after dinner I scoop. My cats are thrilled that the box is always available and easy to use. The house doesn't smell like a litter box and I simply wash my hands after the job is done.

Clean boxes also mean that you won't find "surprises" outside of the box from angry kitties looking for somewhere to do their business.

Clean box equals happy kitty, equals happy Mom.

A cat's litter box should be scooped at least twice a day. When you do this you should top up with fresh cat litter (use unscented clumping cat litter). If you do this then you don't need to completely change the cat litter or clean the box. In fact, cleaning the box with bleach (for example) may stop the cat from using it.

An important thing to remember is that a cat's nose is much more sensitive than yours. One of the main reasons for cats urinating around the house is because you have not scooped the litter.

You know, we recently moved to a larger place and the cat box is now in the very back of the house in the small bathroom connected to the master bedroom. If my wife doesn't clean it every single day, the wall of horrifying cat reek I experience when I open that door makes me want to strap those cats to a rocket and launch them as far away from my home as possible.

What I encourage is daily poop scooping and once a week full empty, wash with bleach.

If the smell gets too bad, I simply refuse to sleep in my own bedroom and feel like a moron because essentially I'm paying an extra $300/month for a bedroom/bathroom for some stupid cats.

:D
