How often should my dog have its shots?

Do all dogs need annual shots? What shots do dogs need regularly?

Hello @buckets! Vaccinating your dog is the best way to prevent your dog from disease. Vaccination begins when the dog is a puppy and it is necessary to get "booster" shots once the dog is an adult. There are conflicting beliefs among veterinarians on how frequently to vaccinate dogs, but annual boosters are common and accepted as safe for dogs.

Dog vaccinations are categorized as being either "core" or "non-core." Core vaccines are recognized as necessary by vets, whereas non-core vaccines may only be necessary for dogs in certain areas where certain diseases are prevalent. Consult with your vet on the selection of the correct vaccines for your dog.

The first shots are given to puppies between 6 and 9 weeks of age. They are given a combination shot of the core vaccines of canine distemper, canine adenovirus, parvovirus, and parainfluenza. At 12-15 weeks, puppies are given another combination shot and also a rabies vaccine.

After the initial puppy vaccines, dogs should receive boosters every year, unless otherwise directed by your vet. Depending on your location and the risk level of your dog contracting a certain disease, you may not need to get all vaccines yearly, but you should at least keep up to date on your rabies shot.
