How often should I trim my dog's claws?
Can I hurt my dog by trimming its claws? Should I take my dog to a professional groomer to have its claws trimmed?

Hi and thanks for your question. The frequency of trimming a dogs nails would depend on how fast they grow and the dogs overall health but generally it's every four to six weeks.
You should familiarize yourself with the anatomy of a dogs claw first. The claw like a humans nail has a hard outer surface and the " quick" which is in the middle and is the blood supply to the nail.
You will need a pair of nail clippers which come in two types, the side cutter and the guillotine. I use the side cutter ones simply because I am comfortable with them. It's also important to remember not to cut really long nails all at once you need to do it a couple of times over a two week period of time. You can absolutely hurt your dog by trimming it's nails, if you cut into the quick you dog can bleed heavily and get an infection from walking outside.
If you are uncomfortable with cutting the dogs nails a groomer will do it for you for a small fee.
