How often should I be examined for prostate problems?

What is the age that I should start thinking about having a prostate check up? What does the doctor do when he checks your prostate?
Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Most doctors say to get your first exam at the age of 50. Some suggest that African Americans start at 40. After that, it should be a yearly exam. During a prostate exam the doctor uses gloved had, reaches into the rectum with a finger, and feels the prostate for any hardness or lumps.
The blood test for prostate cancer has come under fire lately as not being reliable.
You can also do a self exam, as this link shows: http://www.healthcentral.com/drdean/408/81106_3.html
