How often should a pet go to the vet?

Your pet absolutely needs to see the veterinarian at least once a year for a check-up. If you think this is too often, think of it like this: a dog ages, roughly, seven years for every one year. Seeing the veterinarian once a year, in pet years, is actually comparable to us getting a check up once every seven years. A lot can change over that span of time!
Dogs and cats age more rapidly as they get older and age more rapidly if they are overweight. For this reason, senior dogs and cats (and those that are obese) should see their veterinarian every six months for a senior wellness exam.
A wellness exam for your dog or cat will generally include a physical examination where the doctor feels the pet’s body, manipulates joints and listens to the heart and lungs. The ears, eyes and throat will also be looked at as will the teeth and gums. Vaccines will be given as necessary and, if the vet finds anything out of the ordinary, blood work or x-rays may be warranted.
Taking your pet to the veterinarian on a regular basis may help extend the life of your best friend!
