How often is Adderall prescribed to children?

There seems to be a rise in the number of children taking drugs such as Adderall and Ritalin. Why do you think these drugs are be prescribed to children more now than before? How often is Adderall really prescribed to children under the age of 18? Is there an age minimum for this drug? Does it effect young kids differently then older ones? How do doctors know this is the medication a child should be taking? What kind of tests does a doctor perform before prescribing Adderall? Are there other drugs that doctors should prescribe before they give Adderall?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Adderall is frequently prescribed to the children. Adderall may be given a child of THREE years old. Adderall is approved for use in children in three years or over age THREE years. It is generally started at a dose of 2.5mg in children under age 5 and gradually increased as necessary.

Older children often start with a 5mg dose. These double scored tablets are available in sizes of 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg, 15mg, 20mg, 25mg and 30mg.

Q. Why do you think these drugs are be prescribed to children more now than before?
The symptoms of ADHD in children is now well known and the safety of Adderall in children is well documented now than before. (But the safety of Adderall in pregnancy is not well established like the safety in children).

For your other questions, see the link below:
1. Adderall and Adderall XR is approved for use in children over the age of six years, although regular Adderall can be used in younger children from 3-5 years.

2. Adderall XR is a long acting form of this stimulant that can be given just once a day, so that children don't have to take a lunch time dose of Adderall.
