How often does Google Earth update its satellite photos?

I will often open up Google Earth when I am traveling someplace new, or even when I'm looking up directions locally. I like the program because it gives me a visual of what the streets and buildings look like so I know where I'm going before I get there. It helps especially when I'm looking for a place and I'm not sure if it's located in an apartment, dorm or house, or if a business is in a strip mall or not. I can grasp onto that information before leaving, and I won't have to drive back and forth trying to find an address; I can go with landmarks. The other day, I was driving to a yoga studio and the map on Google Earth looked completely different from the place I ended up. Maybe I was just confused or in the wrong spot, but I ended up not finding the place. Could this have happened because the air photo on Google Earth wasn't updated recently? I find myself sometimes looking at my own house from above and not recognizing the cars in the driveway. Has it been years since Google has taken new photographs from the satellites? Or do they do it periodically? By state or country? How and when is this done?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Google Earth uses the best satellite imagery they can, but this is usually 1-3 years old.

Google Earth acquires the best imagery available, most of which is approximately one to three years old. The information in Google Earth is collected over time and is not in 'real time'. For example, it's not possible to see live changes in images.
