How often do you webcam?

How many times a week would you say you use your webcam and why?
Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I have a webcam on my mac, yet it's not something I do a lot of, just for fun once and a while, yet not for person to person communication, though this may change as time goes on. I've tried streaming from my phone with Qik, and this is cool! I believe some people like it more than others, and some people find it to be a little odd to see someone on the other end of the computer. I have mixed feelings about webcams, as I've seen the good reasons for it, and then I also see the not so good reasons.

I believe webcams are good:

1. You can see someone you are not able to see from a distance.
2. You can look someone in the eye online and know they are real.
3. Your meeting really happens, it's not just an email.

I believe the challenge with webcams:

1. It distances humans so that they do not have to be together in real life.
2. It gives someone a false sense that everything is okay with that person, just because you see them on cam, when in reality there may be something they are hiding.
3. It seems like you've seen someone yesterday, when you may have not seen them in years!

Now you have it, both sides of the story! There is a lot of great software out there where you can use webcams!

Here's some cool webcam and streaming video sites. Movino is interesting, as are the others. I believe there is much improvement to be made in this space, yet see for yourself. Enjoy!

I use my webcam as a webcam maybe every month to chat with my sisters or parents. I also use it as a security camera that records whenever it detects motion. This was nice to have in a dorm room since unfortunately it is hard to be very trusting on a college campus.

Very, very rarely. Haha. Only once maybe every 6 months or so.. Usually when I completely bored out of my mind. :)

I use webcam a couple of times per week. My iMac has a v/good camera built in.

I have family in the midWest (I'm in southern California) and the UK. They both use the Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000. we use the free webcam service from Sightspeed.com. If you have a decent Internet connection, the service offers excellent picture and sound quality.

I have used it a few times when out of the country. The problem is, I always have to buy and set up a web cam for anyone I want to talk to, which makes it a relatively useless technology unless you want to talk to strangers that happen to have one.

Not very often. Maybe once or twice a month. My parents live across the country, and my mom got a MacBook a few months back. iChat makes it so super-simple for them to see me a couple times each month.

Well if I actually did have a web cam, I would probably be doing it as often as I was online and probably only if my other friends would have one as well. Then I would use Windows Live Messenger.

I am waiting for Qik to be available for my iPhone. In the mean time I try to use UStream.tv and YouTube.com.

I like to do Screen Captures and show people what to do on their computer. Like computer training. I am working a new program right now.
