How often do you use a recipe from a cookbook?

I only do about once a week. The rest of the time I just heat up pre-prepared meals, either canned or frozen
Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I follow recipes from the book often when I want to try something new, especially for baking as measurements must be exact in baking. In cooking, I use recipes from book when I cook foreign food I've never tried before. After I am skilled in cooking it, I will only use recipes as a source of inspiration.

I've never really thought about it, but now since you mention it I never use a recipe from a cookbook. Actually, I rarely use recipes at all. When I'm not sure how to do something, I'll usually just run over to the computer and let Google answer my question. I always find a recipe that can tell me what I'm doing wrong or what I'm missing pretty quickly. I don't try making new dishes to often, so that's a big part of it too. I suppose I should be more creative, but I'm not usually willing to put that much effort into food preparation unless it's for a holiday or special occasion.

Honestly? I don't own a single cookbook. And even though my parents do, we rarely use them. Why bother when there's a wealth of recipes available for free on the Internet? Good recipes, too, from reliable sources.

Besides, for most of my day-to-day cooking, I improvise. It doesn't take a recipe to make, for instance, sauteed chicken and greens. And the upside here is that these are things I know I can make. Just having a recipe doesn't mean you have the culinary chops to actually make something taste right. God knows I've screwed up my share of recipes over the years!

I'm not a very good improvised cook, primarily because I have an uncommonly high taste for salt, garlic and onions.. without a recipe to follow my food is near uneatable to anyone but me because I just add to much of those three because I like them in high quality. So I almost always use a recipe.. I'd say about 50% the time it's from a book. We have a shelf full of them.. my husband sort of collects them. The other 50% of the time I'm lazy and google it. That's also easier if you have ingredients and don't know what to make with them. Sites like epicurious have a meal by ingredient search, just enter what you got and they can tell you stuff you can make.

Four times in a fortnight. I try all the four dishes from the Femina Magazine because they provide us recipes from the top notch chefs who work at 5 star and 7 star hotels. Since, I don't have enough money to shell out in such hotels, I try their recipes at home. I suggest you to do the same. Very yummy yum ya... Now thinking of it, my mouth has started watering now... :)

Since moving out of the US and not having very many prepackaged meal choices I find we are back to cooking from scratch a lot. It's actually healthier and cheaper here to do so too. The few prepackaged things are imported so they are costly. Since my net connection is not so reliable, I tend to look my things up in my cookbooks. Sure glad I brought them with me. Today we made a blueberry mango cobbler and last we we did a banana pudding from scratch. I had not made one in ages so I definitely needed the recipe.

I seldom look for recipes in a cookbook anymore. If I am looking for a certain kind of recipe, I usually just search the Internet to find what I'm looking for. However, most the time, lately since I'm only cooking for myself, I either cook of a separate frozen meal or cook up something that I can eat on for a couple of days. :-)

I haven't cooked something from a cookbook in quite a while. But I have been wanting to bake something lately. Pastry, cupcakes....something fun to decorate. But to be honest, I would use box cake mix....I'm too lazy and don't have enough time to start from scratch.

Once in a while I will try a new recipe from a cookbook. By this time most of my recipes are in my head. I have always liked to cook because I have always liked to eat.

I look for inspiration in cook books. If I don't, then I wind up eating the same things over and over. This isn't necessarily bad as they are favorites or easy to make. However, I love to cook and the pictures in the book or tv shows that are about cooking, will inspire me to go beyond the recipes that I know off the top of my head. Many times I will combine features of what I know and a recipe. Or, if I don't have certain parts of the recipe on hand (or I don't like them) I will omit or replace them with something else.

I might do an actual cook book recipe a few times a month but I'm trying to use the more frequently because I'm actually likely to make something more interesting than if I just rely on my usuals.

I do all the time. I actually have several handy in my kitchen at all times. If I have something in mind and I can't find it in one of my books I will search the internet. Then I print off the recipe and put it in a binder that I have. It's full of recipes I have found in magazines or online.

This is the actual shelf of cookbooks from my kitchen. The really old one with the bind torn off was my mothers cookbook. The blue binder is the one with the collection of recipes from various sources.
