HI and thank you for your question. Guppies generally drop a littler of baby Guppies or fry every four weeks. Yes, they can have a lot of babies in a short amount of time.
If you are just starting out with Guppies as a pet then yes only get three or four fish. Guppies are very social fish so never buy just one Guppy, chances are he will die from loneliness if you do.
You will also need a tank that is about five to ten gallons with no gravel on the bottom, Guppies like to sleep on the bottom of the tank and gravel is uncomfortable for them to sleep on. You do not need a very expensive filter system either as they are small fish and will likely get sucked up into it if it's too big.
While it is possible to sell Guppies, you will not get very much money as most pet stores will only buy them from you when they reach maturity at six weeks of age. Therefore you would need another tank to keep the fry in until they mature. You can however trade them for other fish and or supplies.
