How often did Halley of Comet fame get to see the comet? Once? Couldn't have been more than twice... And he gets the thing named after him?

Edmond Halley saw the comet in 1682 but did not discover it. What he did notice was that the 1682 comet had nearly the same orbit as previous comets in 1607 and 1531. Halley believed that these three comets were actually a single object in an orbit that brought it close to the sun every 76 years, and he predicted that it would be seen again in 1758. Halley died before that time, but the comet was named after him in honor of his successful prediction.
