How much would your life be affected if you couldn't lie?

Tip for best answer: M$1.00

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Good question! I think looking at the big picture, my life would not be too tremendously affected by the inability to lie, since I typically do not bend the truth. If there are situations in which I feel the truth may hurt or disappoint another person, I find a way to break the truth sensitively to them but make sure that at the same time I highlight their strengths and positives on the same matter. For example, if a friend asked me my opinion about her homemade seafood dish that she had effectively ruined, I would try to point out her creativity and some of the favorable ingredients while carefully letting her know that this specific dish just wasn’t for me. I would also tell her, though, that seafood wasn’t my favorite food in the world and that if she let my friend so-and-so try it (who loved seafood) she would probably have a winner dish on her hands. There are always ways to circumvent a potentially truth-bending moment and to avoid small scale lies to make a friend feel better or to make yourself look favorable. Apart from that, I am not a good liar and any attempts I made in the past to voice a small fib were quickly uncovered and exposed by my friends or husband who knew me all too well. I guess I would just feel way too guilty not telling the truth, a characteristic that can sometimes make it hard to coexist among people who base their livelihoods on bending the truth to shine a positive light upon themselves.

Not at all. I always tell people the truth and it sometimes offends them. But I think if you didn't want to know why did you ask, because you probably had an inkling you just came to the wrong person for false support.

It would probably affect my life a bit, not in a big way.

I joke around a lot and tell little white lies in the process. You know like when you tell someone something and then stand there and try to keep a straight face while you're waiting for them to figure it out? It just wouldn't work if you couldn't lie. :)

Other than that I'm not a big liar.

I don't lie, I just say things diplomatically. I will need to learn to say things more diplomatically, but that is not relaly a problem, since it is part of my job. (I couldn't say to the parents that their kids are lazy and monstrous, right? I say "not enough motivation" and "too energized". lol)

Well, my life will be certainly different, but I think not in major ways, only in little things such as finding another words to cut off phone marketers. I don't tell my family that I am not a Christian anymore, but again, not being able to lie means I have to find a way around how to NOT tell the truth but not lying either.

Haha!!! My life wouldn't change much...I'm an awful liar. Even when I try to joke and lie about something, it blows up in my face. I'm just not good at it. This is a good and bad quality if you ask me.

At present, my life would not be affected at all if I couldn't lie. I no longer do. No, not even "little white lies". If I don't have anything nice to say about someone's new haircut, for example, then I don't say anything at all.

When I was young though, I prided myself on being able to lie with a straight face. I sometimes wonder how many people I was actually fooling, though. Heh, I'm going to ask a question on that!

If I couldn't lie then my life would be so clean in the eyes of God but I may appear so mean to other people. So, honestly, I use white lies sometimes because I don't want to be rude to others. And I know that nobody is perfect.
