How much wine is considered healthy?

How much wine is too much? Are some wines better for me? Is a rose wine the same as a red wine? What is in wine that makes it good for me? Should I buy US wines or imported wines for better health? Can I make healthy wine at home? Is there scientific data that shows wine is healthy for me?

Typically speaking, one glass of red wine every night or every other night is a healthy amount. This somewhat depends on body weight and diet. Rose wine is not the same as a red wine, it is actually a white wine. As far as U.S wines or imported, it does not typically matter, as long as you are drinking it in moderation. Homemade wine is typically not the way to go, unless you know what you are doing completely, or it is very possible that it will not turn out right. In most of these cases, the wine turns out being too acidic and can actually cause other health problems such as acid reflux. There have been studies both in the past and more recently that prove the occasional glass of red wine is helpful to your heart health. Hope this helps you!

Red wine is the wine that is considered healthy. Rose is not the same as red wine; though the skins of red grapes are used in the initial step of wine making, the skins are not kept in through the fermentation process. As a result, rose is not a beneficial for you health as red wine is. The skins of the grape used in red wine making impart antioxidants, which can be good for the heart.

The antioxidants in wine are flavonoids and nonflavonoids. These can boost good cholesterol, protect the blood vessels of the heart and potentially reduce inflammation. One of the key nonflavonoids is called resveratrol. Red wine is not the only alcohol that can benefit the heart - all alcohol can do this in small amounts. What sets red wine apart are the added help given by the antioxidants.

However, this does not mean that everyone should be drinking large quantities of wine. Very little wine is needed to gain the health benefits provided -- basically one 5oz. glass a day. Men can perhaps have one more glass, but going over that limit negates the healthful affects of wine and will begin to harm your health instead.

Studies on the benefits of red wine are still ongoing, and a lot of data has yet to be collected. The region of the wine has little or nothing to do with the health benefits contained in it, so buying wine made in the US is no better for you than buying wine from France, South Africa or New Zealand.

It is possible to make wine at home, however, it is a time consuming process, and if you don't have access to good wine grapes it probably won't taste very good. If you are truly interested in making wine at home, here is a website that can help you get started: http://winemaking.jackkeller.net/
