Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan in 1989.

Many suggest that the war in Afghanistan gave the final blow to the USSR. In a way, it was like the last pebble which brought the old red sick bear down. It represented a huge political cost for the Soviet Union, a breakup which had hidden much of the internal decay for decades and ultimately leading to the fall of the Soviet Empire.

The economic cost of the war presented some variations according to different Soviet figures, but in general the most agreeable number for the cost of Soviet involvement in Afghanistan during the first 7 years, according to the CIA Office of Soviet Analysis paper, was some $2 billion rubles per year. From the beginning of the war in December 27, 1979 to the year 1986 the USSR spent some 15 billion rubles in the invasion of Afghanistan. Two and a half more years should have taken the global figure to 20 billion rubles for the whole war.

Since the strict censorship on the Soviet Union prevented us to make an accurate analysis today, the number of Soviet casualties also presents variations. Therefore, the official 15.051 dead is an underestimation. Many agree that the figure amounts to at least 35.000 to 50.000 Soviets casualties in action, including the sick, wounded, disabled, missing or captured.

These are some figures from the Soviet War in Afghanistan:

* 15.051 Soviet troops dead (official figure)
* 80.000 Mujahideen dead (official figure)
* 120.000 Soviet troops at peak deployment
* 546.200 total Soviet troops served in Afghanistan
* 1 to 2 million Afghan civilian dead
* 5 million displaced Afghan citizens

...like Germany during 5 and a half years in WWII... the US during 8 years in Vietnam... the USSR during 9 and a half years in Afghanistan... and again, the US during the last 9 years (and counting) also in Afghanistan.

The US stuck in the sands of a far foreign nation... again.

There is no way to know the dollar amount, or in Rubels, however:

The total was 13,836 men, an average of 1,512 men a year. According to updated figures, the Soviet army lost 14,427, the KGB lost 576, with 28 people dead and missing.

Material losses were as follows:
451 aircraft (includes 333 helicopters)
147 tanks
1,314 IFV/APCs
433 artillery guns and mortars
1,138 radio sets and command vehicles
510 engineering vehicles
11,369 trucks and petrol tankers
