The iPad comes in three different storage versions: 16 GB ($499, or $629 with 3G), 32 GB ($599, or $729 with 3G), and 64 GB ($699, or $829 with 3G). Compared to modern laptops, the storage is significantly smaller - most laptops available now come with between 250 GB and 1 TB of hard drive storage (some high end laptops that use solid state storage like the iPad does, come with less, around 128-256 GB).
So, on a purely GB per GB basis, laptops hold far more information, but often that information comes in the form of the operating system and installed software. Plus, laptops can have external storage attached while the iPad cannot.
But, for what an iPad does and doesn't do, the storage options for the iPad are quite adequate and for many, the 16 GB version might be just fine. The two types of information that you might put on an iPad that require the most space are music and videos... the more and higher quality the more space you will need.
