How much should I be spending on an office chair for my home office?

Over the course of putting together all of the necessary items in a home office for myself (no more working on the dining room table) I have come across a lot of office chairs and they like most home office products vary widely by price. I understand that I will "get what I pay for" as it is with most items one would purchase but was hoping to learn how much money I *need* to spend in order to get a comfortable chair with at least average quality but preferably above average quality. Can you help me?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I just recently spent $125 on an office chair in my home office. I do have a bit of advice. Sit on the chair if possible, prior to purchasing it. I do believe you get what you pay for, and if you work full time from home, as I do, there is nothing worse than an uncomfortable chair. My neck had been hurting so bad from a cheap chair, this time we bought the best we found.

If you spend alot of time working from home, do not let cost be an issue. If you are comfortable and your neck and back are comfortable, the chair, in my opinion, is priceless.

Just like a mattress for the bedroom. It is better to get the best from the start.

I personally suggest the La-Z-Boy Hyperion Chair. As I mentioned, go in to a retailer and actually sit on the chair, You will then find what feels the most comfortable to you. good luck!

I just spent $150 on a chair (marked down from $200). The chair's great... the bigger problem (and always has been) is my posture... or lack of it!

I would be curious to find out what brand of chair that @jasoncalacanis buys. I like his philosophy in office ergonomics. The desk can be a wooden crate, but the chair is where you'll be spending your time... and it should be the best!

I agree with Ginamichelle, test drive your chair before you buy it. For me a lumbar support is a must and perhaps for you also. I am fairly short and I need chairs that will adjust for me to comfortably place my feet on the floor. When I was working it was also recommended to me that if I would be doing a lot of typing I would want to invest in a chair without arms or a chair with arms that can be adjusted as sometimes the height of the chair arms in relation to your arms can cause muscle strain in the neck, back, shoulder, and arm region.

Try to garbage pick one. Seriously there are some great chairs in the trash. Spray it with Lysol and wash it with bleach water and you can invest your saved money in lunch for you and your clients.

I would love to be able to find a good office chair for free in my city's recycling center but with recent infestations of bed bugs in the United States I am going to refrain from obtaining a chair this way as the reason it was thrown out might have been that it was in a house with the little bed bug hitchhikers. Thank you tho :)
