How much of a notice is expected with leaving a company?

I found a better job. The company I have been with has been a great stepping stone and I want to leave with grace and dignity. How much of a notice should I give my company? Should I tell them now, two months prior? Or wait? Help, I want to do what is right.
Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Going from one job to another is a huge life change. There are many things you need to keep track of when making the transition from old to new. Giving your soon to be former employer notice is definitely one of them. While you are deciding when to drop the bomb, go ahead and draft your letter of resignation and make sure it's professional as this may be just as important as the cover letter you used to get the job, in the future.

If the tables were turned and your employer was going to let you go, for whatever reason, how much notice would you want to receive in order to make arrangements and be prepared? How would you want your employer to go about letting you know, and how would you want to be treated in order to rate the experience as satisfactory? These answers will help you go about your business with your best foot forward.

from my friend's experience usually 3 weeks is good, 2 at the minimum, becuase your alllowing them good time to organise replacing your postion and gives you enough time to organise your next job.
I think leaving 2 months is a bit much, if you give your boss 3-4 weeks notice that should be fine and respectful
