@mblamar, Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is an essential nutrient. Still, it's possible to hv too much vitamin C.

Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin that supports normal growth n development. Vitamin C also helps ur body absorb iron. Because ur body doesn't produce or store vitamin C, it's important to include vitamin C in your diet. for most people, a small glass of orange juice plus a serving of strawberries, chopped red pepper or broccoli provides enough vitamin C for the day. Any extra vitamin C will simply be flushed out of ur body in ur urine.

For adults, the recommended upper limit for vitamin C is 2,000 milligrams (mg) a day. Although too much dietary vitamin C is unlikely to be harmful, megadoses of vitamin C supplements can cause:

* Diarrhea
* Nausea
* Vomiting
* Heartburn
* Abdominal cramps
* Headache
* Insomnia
* Kidney stones

Remember, for most people, a healthy diet provides an adequate amount of vitamin C.

You can quite safely take 1,000 mg of vitamin C once or twice a day or even 3 times a day.

The Vitamin C Foundation actually recommends 3,000 mg per day but most health authorities recommend a lot less.

Although 100 mg of vitamin C or even as little as 50 mg per day would in most cases be enough it is better to take a bit more to boost your immune system a bit more. Whatever your body doesn't need is eliminated in your urine every day as vitamin C is water soluble.

If you have plenty of fruit and vegetables every day you would probably get sufficient vitamin C. One orange, for example, contains about 50 mg of vitamin C. Tomatoes contain plenty of vitamin C as well and you can find lots of other vitamin C rich foods in a web search for "vitamin c rich foods".

Hi @mblamar! Vitamin C can be found in the fruits that we eat like tomatoes, broccoli, spinach, green peppers, rose hips, cucumbers, asparagus, and lettuce.
You can get more vitamin C from these foods if eaten raw since cooking can destroy it.

Generally, adults need vitamin C supplements. The federal government presently recommends a minimum of 90 milligrams a day for male adults and 75 mg a day for female counterparts.
However, Linus Pauling Institute suggests a minimum does of 400 mg a day for adults

Despite the many benefits of Vitamin C, too much of it can be bad. Government researchers said that more than 2 grams per day can cause upset stomach, diarhhea and even kidney stones and gout. Especially if one is suffering from hemochromatosis, thalaseemia or history of kidney disease he should avoid taking too much dose of vitamin C according to Robert Jacob, Ph.D a research chemist.

Until there will come come more research developments to come up with more solid conclusions, it is best not to take more than 2 grams of Vitamin C every day.

Hi mblamar!

The recommended daily dose of vitamin C is 60-75mg per day. If someone takes more than the body requires, they are at risk of overdosing on vitamin C. Excess vitamin C is carried out of the body through urine but it can cause damage to the body before it is all flushed away.

Overdosing on vitamin C can cause effects such as bloating, gas, mouth ulcers, nausea, strong smelling Urine and an upset stomach.

People who have a bruise, inflammatory disease, muscle sprain, or take regular iron supplements can have serious effects if they take 100mg or more of vitamin C in a single day. This amount of vitamin C will cause overdosing and the effects are that they can produce health problems such as kidney stones, vitamin B-12 deficiencies, copper deficiencies, increased need for oxygen and a build up of rust deposits within the body.

Taking vitamin C regularly will not guarantee that you will not catch a cold as there is both the strength of the virus and your own immune system to consider. The immune system requires a lot more than vitamin C to work its best.

Vitamin C is a very inexpensive vitamin product and can be purchased at an online pharmacy and within your local drug store or supermarket. Vitamin C can also be introducd in to the body directly via certain fresh foods such as apples, oranges, grapefruit, kiwi and carrots as well as many other food products.
