How much is too much to spend on a purse?

I found a purse I absolutely adore, but it's a few hundred dollars. I really want to buy it, but am feeling that my money could be spent in other ways. Where should I draw the line between luxury and budgeting?
Tip for best answer: M$0.37

Only you can decide if a purse is too expensive.

Just take certain things into account:

Can i get the Purse later?

Do i need the Purse?

Why do I want the Purse?

Will i forget about the Purse in a few weeks?

what makes it special?

does this purchase put me economic trouble?

Another great solution would be to sell some of your old purses to pay for part of the cost.

Heres my favorite solution set a goal for yourself and once you achieve it reward yourself by buying that purse.

That all depends on your financial stability. If you are in debt i would say dont go spending hundreds of dollars on a purse. If your financially stable i would say there is no limit. If you are going to spend a few hundred dollars on a purse i would reccommend dooney & bourke, or coach, i own both and have had them for 2-3 years and they still look brand new, they are the only 2 purses i ever use and they have held up extremely well.

i hope this helps:)

I'd say about $20. Maybe a little more if you will use it all the time and it is built to last. Otherwise you are just wasting money frivolously.

It depends on your life style. How long it will take you to make a hundred dollars? If you are making over 100,000 per year, and debt free, then go for it . You deserve that bit of luxury.
But, you feel guilty about it, fine, just keep looking till it comes on sale or a cheaper version of the same design shows up.
To me, I don't need that purse. It seems expensive to me. I may hold it for a few minutes, feel it, then let it go.

I absolutely love expensive fashion items and accessories, as does my girlfriend. If you have adored it for between a few and several weeks, and are able to cut your other general life expenses to pay for 50% of the price, I think you should be able to buy it guilt-free. However, other factors to consider are whether or not you'll be able to find it again, whether or not it is a four season bag (vs. summer only, for instance), and even its lifespan (white cloth gets dirty and worn really quickly - guess how I know).

I think anything over $50 would be considered a luxury. If you could afford it then that is fine but on a budget you have to be thrifty and that sounds like too much money for a budget. I just found a new purse after searching for 3 years and it was on sale at JC Pennys for $40 and it works great. I'm sure you could find a suitable purse that would be functional at a lower cost. It might not be as pretty as the one you found but you might feel guilty after spending hundreds of dollars. There is such a thing as buyers remorse where you spend much more money based on impulse and then you really start to regret it later after the damage is done. Make sure to take some time to think about it so that you at least aren't buying it on a whim.

It depends on how much you get. If you earn a lot, and have big savings on the bank, then it's okay to spend on things you like even they costs more than hundreds of dollars. But if what you earn for a month just fits your monthly bills and expenditures, then I think it's not wise to buy the purse you're talking about.

Let's put it this way...
- If you earn X and your monthly bills and expenditures only costs like 50% or below from what you get monthly and you have big saving on the bank, then it's okay to spend on some luxuries. Just make sure that you wouldn't have to spend your entire savings just to get something...
- if you earn X and you spend like 50-60%, then it's okay to spend a little when it comes to some luxuries.
- if you earn X and only 30% or lower is left from what you get monthly, I think it's not wise to spend on luxuries for now. If you want, you can save money for it and get the item eventually but buying it right away isn't just practical.

Remember, like you said, you could have spent your money in some more important things. Plus, in times of need or emergencies, it's a lot okay if you have money to back you up. That's why saving is a lot more important for now especially if you really don't get that much.
