How much is a real horse?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Horses vary from free as the poster above listed to any amount. You need to determine what you want the horse for first, your experience level, determine how much you can afford and then start a search from there. You will find that the initial cost of the horse is the cheapest part of it. You will need to reseach feed costs, stabling costs etc in your area to determine if you can even afford to keep a horse. If you can't afford to keep a horse, many times you can work in exchange for lessons or ridetime at an equestrian facilty. You can also lease a horse for a monthly fee. This too can be split with others sometimes.

Depends on the breed and the training. If a horse has been trained and has won competitions it will be valuable, if a horse has never been ridden or trained at all it will be less expensive. However if it is a valuable breed (like an Andalusian) then it will be more expensive than a pony or more common horse (like a Quarter Horse).

A great horse can range from free (adopted) http://www.equinetourism.co.uk/equineestablishments/ponyorganisations.asp to many, many thousands of dollars.

Be really up front about how much the cost is. Also have an "exit plan" at some point you may go away to college, what then?

An average horse may cost only $3000 to buy, but over its working life can easily cost $100,000 to take care of. I’m often amazed at people who feel that cannot spend a couple of thousand dollars more for the horse they really want, considering that the purchase price is perhaps 5 or less of the cost of owning a horse.
