This is ironic because, I don't remember the news source, but I was watching the local tv last Friday just a day or so after his death and they interviewed some Iranian-Americans at a protest in L.A.. They said the people of Iran seem to have an especially close connection with Michael Jackson, because he is one of the persons most closely associated with freedom and the United States in their country.
One can imagine that with the large restrictions on freedom in that country, they would grasp onto anything representing freedom in the West that they could, and MJ was one of the icons they attached themselves to. And many Iranians seemed to have a special connection with his music even right up until his death.
