How much does the wedding band mean to you?

I suppose that if my husband and I would have had the finances to support a “finer” ring at the time we got married, it is possible that I would have scored a beautiful diamond. Truth be told, if I had a choice between a $20,000 wedding band, or put the money toward the down payment on a house, I would choose the house. Because, as pretty as diamond is, (and I’m a sucker for shiny things), you cannot live in it. Or drive it. Or eat it. The thing is, our culture puts a lot of emphasis on something that is symbolic, but not a defining factor in whether or not that marriage makes it or fails. Couples take on financial strain in order to attain a ring that they feel pressure to get.
Ever since a stone fell out of my little ring, I haven’t really worn it. I substitute it with funky cocktail rings. I do plan on getting the stone replaced, and wearing my ring again, though. It can keep some creepy men at bay… but then it does sometimes attract the freaks who like a challenge.
I didn’t think I cared so much before about wedding rings, and then I noticed my husband sometimes left the house without his… It kind of bothered me a bit. Not because I think he’s gonna cat around, (Kudos if he finds someone else, he’s been unemployed for three years, now), but because sometimes we get really busy. Too busy. Somehow, the simple gesture of wearing them is kind of a physical way of connecting, reminding you that there’s someone else to think of… long after your ring loses it shine.
