You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Newspaper articles all week long have specified a cost of $2 million to ferry the shuttle from Edwards AFB, California; to Florida. The other answer here of $230,000 may just be the cost of fuel or something. While none of the articles break down where the $2 million goes, I'm sure there's a number of costs in addition to fuel, such as servicing the 747 carrier plane, salaries of the pilots and flight crews, etc.

Thanks bugsi, I thought it was much higher than $250k. The article from other answer is from '05; that could be why.

According to NASA, the price tag for a cross-country shuttle trip is around $230,000.

Slate.com states how it would be done.

"Due to the piggybacked plane's lousy aerodynamics and sizeable weight, the SCA's fuel efficiency is significantly less than that of a commercial airliner. As a result, an SCA can't fly more than 1000 nautical miles without refueling. The trip back will take up to 12 hours of flight time spread over two or three days".

I remember as kid seeing the shuttle Enterprise piggybacked on a plane landing here in Mobile at Brookley Field..

Seems like the whole town turned out that day to see it.. Made the local news and everything..

About $1.8 million and a week of time. The added costs include attaching and removing the Shuttle from its transport craft, fuel for the transport craft, as well as the "pathfinder" plane that flies ahead of the Shuttle and its transport to assess weather conditions along the flight path.
