Good news, it will not cost anything to get an engraving for your iPad. This is true, whether or not you buy the iPad for yourself or as a gift. Apple offered the free engraving for the 2010 holiday season. There is no additional cost for you to add a laser-engraved message onto a new iPad's back. Engraving does extend the shipping time by a little. But, keep in mind that Apple could apply personalized iPod policy for no returns on engraved iPads. Also, if you decide to sell the iPad later, the resell value would be greatly reduced with personalized engravings on your iPad. So, if you do personalize it, try to make as general as possible. There are always newer versions released and you will probably want to upgrade at some point.
