How much does it cost to fly on a private jet?

Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

well, it's not cheap!!

There are multiple ways you can choose to fly privately, but if you fly occasionally the best way to go is on-demand charter. The major costs with charter are:

- the hourly rate of the aircraft (from $1200 for a little TurboProp, $1800 for a Light jet that seats 4-6 max., and up for larger jets)
- hourly fuel surcharges, which vary based on whatever oil is going for and the size of the jet, but figure another $300-$500 hourly minimum at current prices
- Federal Excise Tax (7.5%)
- positioning fees: unless you book a jet that's at the airport you're going to fly from, you pay for the flight time for it to come pick you up. Also, if you're not doing a short round-trip back to the same airport, you pay for it to go back without you.

In general, a short flight like between Boston and New York round-trip is probably going to cost you like $7K-$10K for turbo-prop or light jet.

This site has some good tips on understanding how private jets and charters are priced:

Air Charter Team says between $1,550 to $5,200 per hour for a private business jet. Also included links below to an article that discusses a number of different similarly priced options, as well as "Fractional Ownership," which kinda sounds like timeshares for private jets.

You can also get quotes from Jets.com...
