How many yoke of oxen do I need to travel the Oregon Trail?

I'm guiding a party of settlers from Independence, Missouri, to Oregon's Willamette Valley by way of the Oregon Trail via a Conestoga wagon. I have most of the needed supplies, but I'm wondering how many oxen I will need.

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

You can never have too many oxen on a trip like this. I say a minimum of 37 should be fine. But, if you can find any unicorns to travel with, the number of ox could potentially be cut in half. Unicorns are magical.

Well, assuming that you are taking supplies necessary for a family to survive 6 months, you would need two yoke (or 4 oxen) to travel the Oregon Trail.

First, ditch those Conestoga wagons. They're no good where there are no roads. Get two smaller farm wagons to substitute for each. You'll need about 3 oxen per wagon. Two will pull a wagon, but you can't afford to have one get sick or die and leave you stuck in the wilderness. You might be lucky going this year - it's the Year of The Ox.
