The amount of World Cup spots given to CONCACAF teams has varied down through the years. Currently, since the expansion of the World Cup to a 32-team tournament in 1998, CONCACAF is allocated three automatic qualifying positions.
Since the 2006 qualifiers, however, there has been an opportunity for a fourth CONCACAF member to qualify, via a play-off against a team from another footballing zone. Trinidad and Tobago's win over Bahrain in a 2005 play-off meant that there would indeed be 4 CONCACAF teams at the 2006 finals, but Uruguay's victory over Costa Rica in the 2009 play-off means that only the USA, Mexico, and Honduras will be at the tournament in South Africa later this year.
Between 1982 and 1994, when 24 teams contested the World Cup finals, CONCACAF was allocated just two places, even when Mexico qualified automatically as hosts in 1986, and USA in 1994.
Prior to this, there was generally just one CONCACAF team at the tournament, with the exception of Mexico 1970, where the hosts were joined by El Salvador, and the 1930 and 1950 World Cups, where both the USA and Mexico were present.
The best performance by a CONCACAF team at a World Cup was USA reaching the semi-finals of the inaugural tournament in 1930.
