Ramesses II commissioned two temples to be built in the 13th century BC, over 3,000 years ago. The two temples together are called Abu Simbel, and are called the Great Temple and the Small Temple. Construction began in 1244 BCE and ended in 1224 BCE. The temples were built 280 km from Aswan in the drainage of the Nile, and were moved in recent history so they would not be inundated by water after the completion of the Aswan High Dam in the 1960s.
Ramesses II and his underlings also built at least 4 rock temples in Nubia during his reign. The Amada temple was already built, but he repaired it and made additions. Wadi al-Sebua was built at New Sebua. Derr is a temple at New Amada, but it was originally miles south on the east bank of the Nile. Derr was for the sun god Re. and it was erected for an observance of his 1st 30 yr Sed celebration. The ruins at Gerf Hussein are in poor shape and it was built by a viceroy during Ramesses II's reign. It was a rock-cut and freestanding temple like Abu Simbel.
